Introduction

Alvord Unified School District is dedicated to using technology to enhance learning, which engages and empowers all learners in a global society to foster a productive, innovative, and ethical citizenry. Technology can be a powerful tool for transforming learning. It can help affirm and advance relationships between educators and students, reinvent our approaches to learning and collaboration, shrink long-standing equity and accessibility gaps, and adapt learning experiences to meet the needs of all learners. The twenty-four schools within our district should be incubators of exploration and invention. Educators should be collaborators in learning, seeking new knowledge and constantly acquiring new skills alongside their students. Education leaders should set a vision for creating learning experiences that provide the right tools and supports all learners to thrive. We will work together to harness the power of technology to advance learning while engaging and empowering students in a connected world.

District’s technology strategies will focus on utilization of cutting-edge technologies that support teaching and learning to ensure that students will realize their unlimited potential.  These strategies drives our students, families, teachers, and administrators to embrace a visionary plan. This technology plan concentrates on transforming classrooms to be future ready and to facilitate the types of learning that will make learners thrive in a global society. All learners will have engaging and empowering learning experiences in both formal and informal settings that prepare them to be active, creative, knowledgeable, and ethical participants in our globally connected society. Technology can enable personalized learning or experiences that are more engaging and relevant, and can help organize learning around real-world challenges and project-based learning using a wide variety of digital learning devices and resources to show competency with complex concepts and content. Learning can move beyond the classroom and take advantage of learning opportunities available in museums, libraries, and other out-of-school settings. Learners can pursue passions and personal interests. Technology access when equitable can help close the digital divide and make transformative learning opportunities available to all learners.

Current research on teaching and learning has played a central role in the development of this plan.  Particular work from well respected researchers such as: Punya Mishra, Matthew Koehler, Lee Shulman, Yrijo Engeström, Everett Rogers, John Kotter, Jean Lave, Etiene Wenger, James Pellegrino, George Siemens, Malcolm Knowles, Seymour Pappert, Clay Shirky, Jeron Lanier, Darling Hammond, Henry Jenkins, Jeannette Wing… are weaved into the DNA of this plan.
